145 Pacific, Gordon Bell Sports Field and Community Meeting on Police

HISTORIC BUILDING AT 145 PACIFIC TO BE DESIGNATED The Property and Development Committee agreed this week to add a unique warehouse building on the edge of the Exchange District located at 145 Pacific to the City's Historical Buildings List. Sports Manitoba will be moving their offices to the building and have put plans to demolish the 1884 part of the building on hold for now. It is good news for the downtown to have such an organization moving into a heritage building. Having an interesting and vibrant historic district that is valued and well used is part of what makes our city livable and viable. It is important to celebrate these small victories and to keep vigilant as our city develops. GORDON BELL SCHOOL NEEDS A SPORTS FIELD You may be aware that Canada Post has plans to construct a new building on the land beside Gordon Bell High School in the West Broadway area. At the same time the idea of using that land for a sports field and community green space has taken on a new life. Community members as well as elected officials from all levels of government who represent the area have been meeting and have been advocating to Canada Post. MP Pat Martin, MLA Rob Altermeyer and myself have been supporting the community's effort in the hope that there can be a solution that meets both the needs of the community and the needs of Canada Post. The idea is to urge Canada Post to hold off construction, to look for an alternative location (preferably in the downtown area) and to allow the community to create a sports field for inner city students and community members to use. For more info you could contact MP Pat Martins office. There are also two facebook sites that I am aware of on the topic.
