“OURWINNIPEG ” DOCUMENTS MADE PUBLIC TODAY/PUBLIC INFO SESSIONS

 The draft of the new 25 year city plan entitled “OurWinnipeg” has been made public today.

It will take some time to review the documents and to form a clear sense of this plan but here are a few initial thoughts.

A lot of really excellent planning work has been done by city staff. 

However, it is clear that one year is an inadequate time frame for staff to complete all the work required for a plan of this magnitude. (more…)

MAY COUNCIL UPDATE

 PUBLIC INFO SESSIONS ON “OURWINNIPEG”  COMING SOON
The draft of the new 25 year plan for Winnipeg, called “OurWinnipeg” is expected to be released before the end of May.There are Public Information Sessions planned from May 26 through to June 3, 2010. The purpose of these sessions is to encourage citizens to become familiar with the draft OurWinnipeg material in advance of a formal approval process. (more…)

VEOLIA CONTRACT FOR WASTE WATER UPGRADES MAY BE APPROVED WITHOUT FULL DISCLOSURE

 Would you sign a 30-year mortgage for a house without knowing the price you are paying?That is a lot like what Winnipeg City Council is being asked to do on Wednesday, May 19th at 9:30 am when it votes on whether to approve a 30-year contract with the French based multinational, Veolia, to design, build and help manage Winnipeg’s sewage treatment plant upgrades and expansion plans. MASS (TRANSIT) CONFUSION

The best thing about the discussion held at the April City Council meeting is that Rapid Transit is not a completely dead issue and is still being talked about in our city. However, I think a lot of people would like to see more than “talk” and see our first Rapid Transit Corridor from Downtown to the University of Manitoba actually completed, hopefully in their lifetimes! MOTION ON UGANDA’S ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILL, BUDGET PASSES AND MORE

A notice of motion was tabled this week that resolves that Winnipeg City Council join with the Government of Canada and the international community to denounce Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill and any similar legislative proposal.
As you may be aware, the City of Winnipeg has had a long partnership with the City of Kampala in Uganda and therefore has a unique connection with that country. With this motion, Winnipeg will be one of the first (if not the first) municipality in Canada to support such a motion. (more…)

JENNY’S 2010 OPERATING BUDGET SPEECH

The annual operating budget contains most of the big decisions that City Council will make in any given year.
As such, there are always a number of very positive initiatives and activities that the budget makes possible. However the budget, also reveals what it is that the city is NOT dealing with effectively and other shortcomings that are of great concern to many Winnipeggers. (more…)
